A road tunnel of the oldest grade in Japan, said to have been hand-carved by the monk Zenkai over more than 30 years during the Edo period. The rock wall path, still bearing chisel marks, conveys the weight of history and, combined with the clear waters of the Yamakuni River flowing beside it, creates beautiful gorge scenery. It is also known as the setting for Kanpai Kikuchi's novel "Beyond the Grudge" (Onshū no Kanata ni), making it a recommended spot for history-loving families. The appeal lies in the ability to see the texture of the rock face up close while walking.

Tips

荒天時は中止や延期の可能性があるため、当日は中津市の公式発表を確認しましょう。終了後は道路が混み合うため、少し時間を置いてから帰路につくのがおすすめです。河川敷は足元が暗いので懐中電灯やスマホのライトを準備しておくと安心です。

Tips

From the parking lot, walk a short distance along the walking path to the tunnel entrance. Your feet may get wet, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. In summer, there are sections with little shade, so be sure to bring water for hydration.
