Mountain Temple with Over 3,700 Stone Buddha Statues in a Clifftop Cavern

An ancient temple nestled in the clifftop caverns of Rakanzan (羅漢山), a rocky mountain in the Yaba Gorge. More than 3,700 stone Buddha statues are enshrined throughout the cavern interior. The rock chamber where five hundred Arhat statues line up in rows is particularly impressive, and the sight of each unique Rakan figure gazing back at you is unforgettable and awe-inspiring. The temple is also known for its unique custom of dedicating wooden spatulas (shoji) inscribed with wishes. From the foot of the mountain, you can climb via the stone-stepped approach path lined with cedar trees, or take a lift to near the main gate, allowing you to choose according to your fitness level.
Tips
The approach path features continuous stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. If using the lift, an additional fee applies. There are areas in the temple grounds where photography is discouraged—follow posted instructions. The mountain area remains cool even in summer, so bringing a light cardigan or shawl is recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 25 minutes required. Enjoying a slow, peaceful visit through the grounds in the clear morning air is ideal.
