About this spot
One of the Gokayama gassho-zukuri settlements registered as a World Heritage site alongside Shirakawa-go, with about 20 thatch-roofed houses where people still live today. A short walk to the viewing spot overlooking the settlement offers a panoramic view of houses nestled in the mountains and rice paddies—perfect for commemorative photos. Within the settlement, you'll find souvenir shops, dining establishments, and gassho-zukuri houses used as inns, allowing you to experience the living atmosphere of a mountain village. Walking with three generations, you may find your grandparents sharing nostalgic stories about this timeless landscape.
Tips
Pay a preservation cooperation fee at the parking lot (approximately ¥500 for regular cars) to enter the settlement. Gravel roads and gentle slopes within the settlement make walking shoes recommended. The viewing spot is a few minutes' walk uphill, so take your time if you have concerns about uneven terrain. Early morning hours have fewer tour buses, making for a quiet, peaceful walk.
