The Romon Gate, designed by architect Tatsuno Kingo who also designed Tokyo Station, stands as the symbol of Takeo Onsen. Standing at the entrance to Takeo Onsen with over 1,300 years of history, the vermillion structure reminiscent of a dragon palace possesses an unforgettable presence once seen. Beyond the gate is a modern wing housing a museum with exhibits on historical bathhouse architecture and the history of Takeo Onsen. Located about 15 minutes by car from Omachi, it makes an ideal first stop on your day's itinerary. In the summer sun, the vermillion color stands beautifully against the blue sky—be sure to capture it on camera.

杵島郡大町町の大町町民グラウンドを舞台に開かれる、地域に根ざした夏の恒例行事「ふるさと大町納涼まつり」です。2026年は8月13日(木)の開催で、開場は17時、本番は18時から21時まで。広いグラウンドいっぱいに提灯が灯り、盆踊りの輪やステージの催しで会場全体が夏祭りの空気に包まれます。大きな都市の祭りとは違う、住民同士の距離が近いアットホームな雰囲気が魅力で、地元の子どもたちの浴衣姿や、久しぶりに顔を合わせる家族連れの姿があちこちで見られます。昼間に訪れた武雄や白石の名所とはまた違う、町の素朴な夏の一夜を締めくくりにふさわしい時間です。
Tips
会場は屋外のグラウンドのため、レジャーシートや携帯椅子があると観覧が快適です。夜は虫が出やすいので虫除け対策を。駐車場の台数には限りがあるため、早めの到着がおすすめです。荒天時の開催可否は町の広報や公式情報で確認しましょう。

About a 10-minute walk from Takeo Onsen Station. The area around the Romon Gate is free to view; the adjacent museum requires an entrance fee. During summer, the sun is intense, so stay hydrated while exploring. Multiple parking lots are available throughout the hot spring town.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Late morning to early afternoon is less crowded and better for photography.
