Historic tunnel reportedly hand-carved by the Buddhist monk Zenkai

About this spot

A historic site where the Buddhist monk Zenkai is said to have spent approximately 30 years hand-carving with only pickaxes and chisels during the Edo period, and is also considered the beginning of Japan's road tunnels. Known as the setting for Kankichi Kikuchi's novel 'Beyond Hatred', the hand-carved marks from that era remain on the tunnel's walls today. The scenic landscape woven by the clear waters of the Yamakuni River flowing beside the tunnel and the sheer rock cliffs is a sight to behold unique to Yamakei. It's a walking spot where you can experience history while enjoying the cool, refreshing air of the valley.
