An ancient temple known for its beautiful East and West Pagodas of Hakuho architecture
About this spot
Established in 680 by Emperor Tenmu's vow, this is the head temple of the Hosso sect. The East Pagoda, praised as "frozen music," is a National Treasure that preserves the original appearance from over 1300 years ago and, together with its counterpart West Pagoda, conveys the beauty of Hakuho architecture. The spacious temple grounds offer plenty to see, including the Yakushi Triad statue housed in the Golden Hall, allowing visitors to touch the profound depths of Nara's Buddhist culture as an ancient capital.
