Date Masamune's Mausoleum: A Tour of Brilliantly Ornate Mausoleum Architecture
About this spot
A magnificently ornate Momoyama-style structure built as the mausoleum of Date Masamune. Though destroyed in wartime, it was reconstructed based on historical records, and the brilliantly painted sculptures and gold-leaf adorned mausoleum conveys the splendor of its original design. As you climb the stone steps of the approach path surrounded by Japanese cedar trees, a solemn atmosphere pervades the quiet surroundings. The mausoleums of Date Masamune's second and third successors are also displayed side by side. An adjoining museum houses artifacts related to the Date family.

仙台の夏を彩る東北三大祭りのひとつで、2026年は8月6日から8日までの3日間開催されます。中心部の商店街アーケード通りを中心に、色とりどりの和紙と吹き流しで飾られた巨大な七夕飾りが頭上いっぱいに掲げられ、通りを歩くだけで祭りの華やかさを体感できます。仙台七夕まつりは仙台市の中心市街地一帯を舞台に、江戸時代から続く伝統と現代の装飾が融合した独特の光景を作り出します。初日から多くの人出でにぎわい、夜には飾りに灯りがともり、昼とはまた違った幻想的な雰囲気に包まれます。
Tips
初日・週末は非常に混雑するため、ベビーカーでの移動は人の少ない通りを選ぶのが安心です。アーケード内は屋根があるので小雨でも楽しめますが、蒸し暑さがこもりやすいので飲み物は多めに。周辺は交通規制がかかることがあるので、公共交通機関の利用がおすすめです。
Tips
It's convenient to take Loople Sendai from Sendai Castle Ruins. Since the grounds have many stone steps, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. An admission fee is required. In summer, there's plenty of shade, making it relatively cool for viewing.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. Early afternoon avoids tour bus crowds, allowing for more peaceful viewing.
