About this spot

This park is built on the ruins of Hagi Castle, which was constructed by Mori Terumoto. Located at the foot of Shizuki Mountain with a beautiful setting overlooking the Sea of Japan, the castle's main tower was demolished during the Meiji period, but the remaining stone walls and moat allow visitors to envision the grand castle fortress of the past. The park features a large pine forest and a moat with blooming lotus flowers in summer. Walking the scenic paths, you'll feel the pleasant sea breeze. As it's near Kikugahama, the festival venue, it's an ideal starting point for exploring the castle town.

2026年の萩夏まつりは8月1日から3日までの3日間、指月山を望む白砂の浜辺・菊ヶ浜と、田町商店街・吉田町通り一帯を舞台に開催されます。海に面した開放的な会場は、萩城下町の落ち着いた雰囲気とはひと味違う、夏らしい賑やかさに包まれます。まつりの最終日にあたる8月3日には、田町商店街・吉田町通りに約60店の屋台が並び、18時から22時まで多くの人でにぎわいます。今回のコースで訪ねる初日(8月1日)は、まつりが幕を開けたばかりの高揚感を味わえる日で、浜辺に集う浴衣姿の家族連れの姿に、萩の夏らしい風情が漂います。

Tips

会場周辺は夕方以降、駐車場が混み合いやすくなります。砂浜を歩く場合はサンダルより歩きやすい靴がおすすめです。海辺は夜になると風が涼しくなるので、薄手の羽織ものがあると安心です。

Tips

It's convenient to travel from the castle town on foot or by bicycle. There is an admission fee. In summer, some areas have limited shade, so bring a hat and drinking water.
