Modern dual-tower cathedral commemorating Xavier's visit to Yamaguchi

About this spot

An impressive Catholic church with dual towers built to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Francis Xavier's visit to Yamaguchi. The original cathedral was destroyed by fire, but the current building was rebuilt in contemporary design, and the cathedral interior, with light filtering through stained glass, can be viewed quietly. Unlike Zen temples or Shinto shrines, this place tells of Yamaguchi's long history as a window of exchange with the outside world.

2026年の山口七夕ちょうちんまつりは8月6日から7日までの2日間、山口市中心商店街とパークロード一帯を舞台に開催されます。山口ならではの丸くオレンジ色に彩られた「山口ちょうちん」が街路いっぱいに吊るされ、七夕の笹飾りとともに揺れる光景は、大内文化の香りを今に伝えるこの町らしい夏の風物詩です。夜が更けるにつれて浴衣姿の親子連れや若者たちで通りが埋め尽くされ、まち全体が幻想的な灯りに包まれます。今回のコースで訪ねる初日は、まつりが幕を開けたばかりの高揚感を味わえる日でもあります。

Tips

会場周辺は夕方以降、車両の通行規制がかかることがあるため、公共交通機関の利用が安心です。商店街は人通りが多くベビーカーでの移動はやや大変なので、抱っこ紐があると身動きが取りやすくなります。

Tips

Located within walking distance of Rurikoji Temple and Kosan Park. The cathedral may not be accessible depending on visiting hours or scheduled services, but the exterior alone is well worth seeing.
