After the abolition of the domain system, the former Hagi domain lords of the Mouri family relocated their base from Hagi and built this mansion and garden. The main building, designated as a National Important Cultural Property, is a prestigious structure based on shoin-style architecture, with the attached museum housing numerous art and craft treasures passed down through the Mouri family. The spacious pond garden with a walking path offers changing scenery through the four seasons, with elegant touches reflecting the refined lifestyle of the ruling class. It is an essential cultural heritage site for understanding Hofu's history.

2026年8月3日から5日にかけて開催される御誕辰祭は、学問の神様として知られる菅原道真公の誕生日を祝う、防府天満宮の夏を代表する大祭です。日本で最初に建立された天神さまとされる防府天満宮ならではの格式ある祭事で、期間中は境内に多くの灯りがともされ、夜になっても参拝客の絶えないにぎわいを見せます。桑山を背に朱塗りの社殿が夜空に浮かび上がる光景は、防府の夏の風物詩として親しまれています。今回のコースで訪ねる初日は、祭りが始まったばかりの高揚感に満ちた夜です。

Tips

境内は夜になると多くの参拝客でにぎわい、参道の石段が混み合うことがあります。小さな子ども連れの場合は手をつないでゆっくり歩きましょう。駐車場は早めに満車になることがあるので、公共交通機関の利用も検討してください。
