Walk Around the Pure Land Garden Surrounding Daisen Pond; Flat Paths for Three-Generation Strolling
About this spot
Founded by the Great Teacher Jikaku Ennin, many temple buildings were constructed during the time of Motohira, the second-generation Ōshū Fujiwara lord, and his son Hideihara. Though the temple buildings of those days are lost, the Pure Land garden centered on Daisen Pond remains in nearly complete form and is doubly designated as a special historic site and special scenic spot by the nation. The kondō (waterway) that channels water into the pond is a precious Heian-period garden relic, and together with the state-shore and rough reef-style stone arrangements, it conveys the Heian-era landscape design technique meant to express the Pure Land of the Buddha in this world. The path circling the pond is nearly flat and easy to walk, allowing grandparents and grandchildren to enjoy it at the same pace, which is delightful. The garden, with its reflection of sky and trees in the water's surface, is beautiful no matter what season you visit—it feels as if your heart is being cleansed.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk from Hiraizumi Station and there's a parking lot near the admission office. The paths are flat and easy for grandparents' feet, but they're made of gravel, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Pilgrim stamps and amulets are available at the office near the main hall. As evening approaches, fewer people visit and the pond shows its quieter face.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Afternoon hours with soft light reflecting off the pond surface are recommended.
