About this spot

One of the 12 original castle towers still standing in Japan and designated as a National Treasure, Matsue Castle is a symbol of Matsue. It is characterized by its black, imposing appearance and is affectionately known as "Chidori Castle." The interior of the tower displays historical weapons and documents from ancient times. From the top floor, you can see Lake Shinji, the castle town, and the flow of the Oohashigawa River in one panorama, allowing you to instantly understand the unique geography of the Water City of Matsue.

とうろう流しは、宍道湖と中海を結ぶ大橋川の流れを舞台に、松江大橋周辺・白潟公園で行われるお盆の伝統行事です。2026年は8月16日に開催され、先祖の霊を送るために灯りをともした灯籠が次々と川面に浮かべられ、暗くなった川をゆらゆらと流れていきます。国宝・松江城や水の都・松江の風景と重なり合う幻想的な光景は、夏の終わりを静かに感じさせてくれる、家族で心に残るひとときになります。

Tips

橋の上や川沿いは夜になると混雑するため、早めの場所取りがおすすめです。荒天時の開催可否は主催者の発表を確認してください。

Tips

The pier for the Horikawa Tour (堀川めぐり) boat is also near the castle. Be careful with small children as some stairs inside the tower are steep. Admission fee is required.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour required. Morning to early afternoon, when it's less crowded, is best for leisurely viewing.
