A shrine dedicated to Uesugi Kenshin with splendid views from the mountainside

About this spot

Enshrined on the slopes of Kasuga Mountain, Kasuga Shrine is dedicated to Uesugi Kenshin. Built by local volunteers in the Meiji era, its treasure hall displays replicas and materials related to Kenshin. Climbing to the top of the stone steps opens a vista extending from the Joetsu plain to the Japan Sea—the very landscape Kenshin once looked upon. The shrine's copper statue of Kenshin is also a popular spot for family photos.

2026年の謙信公祭は8月21日から23日までの3日間、戦国最大級の山城として知られる春日山城跡のふもとを舞台に開催されます。越後の英雄・上杉謙信を偲ぶこの祭りでは、例年、甲冑をまとった武者姿の一団による行列など、戦国の世を思わせる催しが見どころとなっています。日が暮れて城跡に灯りがともる頃、家族連れや地元の人々が集まり、謙信ゆかりの地ならではの夜の雰囲気を味わいます。初日となる21日は3日間の祭りの幕開けとして、比較的落ち着いて見物できる日でもあります。

Tips

会場周辺は祭り期間中、駐車場が混み合いやすいため、公共交通機関や臨時駐車場の利用が安心です。夜は山あいで気温が下がることがあるので、羽織るものを一枚持っておくと安心。虫よけ対策もしておきましょう。
