The head shrine of approximately 3,800 Hiyoshi, Hie, and Sanno shrines nationwide, with a long history as the tutelary shrine of Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei. The vast grounds feature the East and West Main Halls and many other shrine buildings, and statues of the 'divine monkey' (masaru), the messenger of the gods, can be seen throughout. The lush approach path offers plenty of shade, making it relatively comfortable for summer walks.

日吉大社の摂社である唐崎神社は、近江八景のひとつ「唐崎の夜雨」の舞台としても知られ、琵琶湖畔にそびえる巨大な松「唐崎の松」で有名です。毎年7月28日に行われるみたらし祭は、人形(ひとがた)に穢れを託して湖に流し、無病息災や家内安全を願う夏越しの神事。琵琶湖の水とともに生きてきた近江の人々の信仰が今も息づく、静かで趣深い夏祭りです。
Tips
神社周辺の駐車場は台数が限られるため、公共交通機関の利用がおすすめです。神事は夕方から夜にかけて行われるため、虫よけ対策をしておくと安心です。人形流しなど神事に参加したい場合は、事前に授与所で確認しましょう。
