A famous castle built by Kato Kiyomasa, counted among Japan's three most famous castles. The distinctive warped stone walls called "musha-gaeshi" (warrior-repelling walls) and the elegant tower are beloved as symbols of Kumamoto by citizens. With ongoing restoration efforts following the earthquake, the castle tower's interior now features rich exhibits where you can learn about the castle's construction history and the development of Kumamoto's castle town. Families can spend time experiencing Kumamoto's history.

熊本市中心市街地を舞台に、毎年夏に開催される熊本最大級の祭りです。2026年は7月31日から8月2日までの3日間開催予定。熊本弁の民謡「おてもやん」に乗せて、企業や地域団体、学生などさまざまなチームが趣向を凝らした衣装で踊り歩く「おてもやん総踊り」が最大の見どころで、花畑公園周辺の街路が踊り手と観客の熱気に包まれます。熊本城を望む城下町で繰り広げられる、市民総参加型の夏の一大イベントです。
Tips
会場周辺は大規模な交通規制がかかり、大変混雑します。公共交通機関の利用が安心です。日中の暑さが残る時間帯からの観覧になるため、水分補給と休憩をこまめに。ベビーカーでの最前列は難しいため、沿道後方での観覧がおすすめです。
Tips
The viewing route may change depending on restoration work status, so follow the guidance signs on the day. There are many stone steps and slopes, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. In summer, some areas have little shade, so remember to stay hydrated.
Best time to visit
Takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. From late morning through early afternoon, tourist numbers are relatively light.
