Housed in a charming former Yasuda Bank building, this museum showcases the traditional craft of making washi paper lanterns, the festival's main attraction. These intricate lanterns are crafted with minimal use of metal fixtures or adhesives, using only washi paper and minimal paste to create precise reproductions of shrines, castles, and palaces. Adults are invariably amazed by the sophistication of this technique. Displays include authentic lanterns worn and danced with during the evening's Senjin Lantern Dance, making this an ideal introduction to the festival. Demonstrations may be available depending on the season.

400年余りの歴史を持つ山鹿灯籠まつりは、2026年は8月15日・16日の2日間で開催され、コースの対象日はその初日です。会場は山鹿小学校やおまつり広場(国道325号)、菊池川河畔など市街地一帯に広がりますが、最大のクライマックスは大宮神社の境内で行われる千人灯籠踊り。和紙と少量の糊だけで作られた金色の灯籠を頭に掲げた浴衣姿の女性たちが、笛や太鼓の音色に合わせて幽玄な明かりのなかゆったりと踊る姿は、一度見たら忘れられない光景です。夜の帳が下りるとともに会場全体が灯籠の柔らかな光に包まれ、山鹿の夏を代表する幻想的な時間が流れます。

Tips

会場周辺は歩行者天国となり、車での来場は交通規制に注意が必要です。臨時駐車場からのシャトル利用が便利な年もあるため、当日の案内表示を確認しましょう。夜は足元が暗くなるので、小さなお子さん連れは懐中電灯があると安心です。
