Walk the Kameyama mountain path to the keep, enjoying sweeping views of the castle town and Okuetsu mountain ranges

A hilltop castle built by Sengoku warlord Kanmori Nagatika on the summit of Kameyama, known as "the castle in the sky" from its ethereal appearance rising from sea clouds. The walk from the base to the keep takes about 20 minutes through verdant woodland paths, with the keep appearing majestically above the stone walls—truly the experience of climbing a castle. Inside the keep is a museum displaying materials related to successive castle lords, and from the top floor you can take in panoramic views of the grid-patterned castle town and the mountains of Okuetsu. A perfect spot to enjoy both a short mountain walk and historical exploration in one visit—a symbol of Ono tourism.

Tips

Multiple climbing routes exist, but the Hyakkenaka route from the south entrance is the standard. Since the path is steep, comfortable hiking shoes and a towel are recommended. The "castle in the sky" appearance in sea clouds occurs most often in early morning from late autumn through early spring, best viewed from the opposite Oinuiyama Castle ruins. Views from the keep are enjoyable year-round. The castle closes during winter, so check opening status in advance. Free parking is available at the base.
