Panoramic Views of the Castle Town and Ariake Sea from the White Tenshu
About this spot
Built by Shigekiyo Matsukura, Shimabara Castle is characterized by its high stone walls and white five-story tenshu. The interior of the tenshu is set up as a museum where you can view exhibits related to Shimabara's history and the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion. From the top floor, you can overlook the roofs of the castle town and the Ariake Sea, making it perfect for understanding the overall layout of the streets you'll walk through later. The moat surrounding the castle is filled with blooming lotus flowers, offering a cool and summery landscape.

「水の都」島原市の中央公園・清流亭周辺を会場に開かれる「しまばら水まつり」です。2026年は8月1日(土)に開催され、市街地に湧き出る清らかな水にちなんだ夏まつりとして、地元の人々にも親しまれています。昼間に巡った島原城や武家屋敷通り、鯉の泳ぐまちで水の恵みを感じたあと、夜はまつり会場でその集大成を味わうという流れです。提灯に照らされた公園と清流亭周辺には夜の涼しい風が吹き抜け、家族で夏の夜を過ごすのにぴったりの雰囲気に包まれます。
Tips
まつり当日は会場周辺が混雑し、駐車場が早い時間に満車になることがあります。公共交通機関の利用が安心です。屋台の出店有無や内容は年により変わるため、夕食は島原中央商店街で済ませておくと安心です。水辺に近づく際は小さな子どもから目を離さないようにしましょう。
Tips
It's about a 10-minute walk from Shimabara Station. Entry to the tenshu requires an admission fee. In summer, the sun is strong, so it's a good idea to bring water and wear a hat.
Best time to visit
Takes about 50 minutes. Early afternoon hours are relatively uncrowded and ideal for leisurely enjoying the views from the tenshu.
