Experience Tranquility in the Tatami Room Overlooking the Spring-Fed Pond

About this spot

A mansion garden surrounded by a pond fed by approximately one thousand tons of spring water daily. Named Shimeicho (meaning "four bright directions") for its fortunate views in all directions, this residence features traditional sukiya-style architecture with a sitting room that juts out over the pond. Sitting on the veranda, you can observe a completely clear water surface at your feet where brilliantly colored carp glide through the water within arm's reach. The only sounds you hear are the murmur of the spring water and the splashing of the carp. Watching the garden where green trees are reflected in the water surface is a luxury unique to Shimabara, the water city. This is a quiet highlight of your castle town stroll—a moment to pause and breathe during your exploration.

Tips

Remember to remove your shoes before entering the tatami room, so easily removable footwear is convenient. As this is a popular photography spot, you may encounter a waiting line during busy holiday hours. To fully appreciate the tranquility, visiting during times when tour groups are fewer is recommended.

Best time to visit

Approximately 50 minutes. The afternoon light, when green foliage is beautifully reflected on the water's surface, is particularly beautiful.
