Overlooking the Castle Town and Northern Alps from the National Treasure Tower

About this spot

This is one of Japan's oldest existing five-story, six-tiered castle towers, retaining the appearance of the Warring States period. The beautiful contrast between the black lacquered boards and white plaster walls makes it one of Japan's five National Treasure castles. The interior of the tower features steep stairs, and you can closely observe features designed for warfare such as gun turrets and arrow slits. From the top floor, you can overlook the Matsumoto castle town and the magnificent Northern Alps mountains that rise behind it.

Tips

Tips

It is about a 15-minute walk from JR Matsumoto Station. Admission is required to view the inside of the tower, and it may take time to enter during crowded times. Since the stairs are steep, small children should carefully climb and descend using the railings.

Takes about 1 hour. Morning to early afternoon is relatively less crowded and allows for leisurely viewing.
