A scenic area in Ariake Sea where, with its extreme tidal differences, the tidal flats expand to the offshore when the tide recedes, revealing layers of crescent-shaped sand patterns drawn by wind and waves. These curved lines are natural artworks, selected as both one of Japan's 100 Best Beaches and Japan's 100 Best Sunsets. The name comes from a legend that Emperor Keiko was so moved by the beauty of this place that he stopped his imperial palanquin to gaze upon it. From a small elevated observation deck, you can look down upon the sand patterns glittering in the light, and on days when sunset coincides with low tide, the entire tidal flat becomes dyed in crimson. Even in the afternoon after the tide has receded, the sand patterns display impressive shadows and contrast. This is the highlight of this course—a place to set up your camera and engage with nature's masterpiece.

Sand patterns are visible only around low tide. Before visiting, always check the tide table to confirm low tide times and time your visit accordingly. The observation deck is accessed via a narrow slope, so drive carefully. On days when sunset coincides with low tide, many photographers gather, so aim for low tide during daytime hours if you wish to enjoy a leisurely viewing.
