2026 Nakamachi Water Play Facility: A Full Day Out

This is a walkable port-town outing course starring the Nakamachi Water Play Facility (Nakamachi Mall Fountain Plaza) in Nakamachi Mall, Sakata City. According to the official Yamagata Prefecture Child-Raising Support Site, it runs every day from mid-June to mid-September, spraying water and mist every 15 minutes between 10:00 and 16:00. It sits in a corner under the large roof in front of the Nakamachi Health and Community Plaza, so being able to play in the water while staying out of the sun is an advantage only a town-center spot can offer. Use is free (parking is charged), so you can drop by easily while shopping or eating. However, the Sakata City official page for the Nakamachi Mall Fountain Plaza has been taken down, and no announcement clearly stating dates for 2026 (Reiwa 8) has been confirmed. Please check the current operating status locally before you set out. In the morning, take your time at the Homma Family Former Main Residence (本間家旧本邸) and the Former Abumiya (旧鐙屋) to view the merchant architecture of Sakata, a town enriched by the Kitamaebune trade. At midday, walk over to the Sankyo Warehouses (山居倉庫) and enjoy the flavors of Shonai (庄内) while looking at the zelkova avenue. In the afternoon, head back to Nakamachi Mall for a shower of water and mist under the big roof.
