Japan's first museum to bear the name 'manga,' this institution houses one of the nation's premier archives with over 400,000 original manga artworks. The museum's greatest appeal is the opportunity to view original manuscripts up close from celebrated cartoonists, including Takao Yaguchi of 'Fishing Lunatic Sanpei,' who has ties to the local Masuda area. You can observe the fine pen strokes and correction marks that are invisible in printed form, and even non-manga enthusiasts will be drawn in by the craftsmanship on display. The museum's efforts to preserve and exhibit these original artworks are also noteworthy, and the manga library within allows visitors to freely pick up and read classic works. Tips

Located about 10 minutes by car from the Jumonji IC on the Yuza-Yokote Expressway, with free parking available. By train, it's about 5 minutes by taxi from Jumonji Station on the JR Ou Main Line. The permanent exhibition area offers free admission; special exhibitions may have an entrance fee. Check the official website in advance for closure dates and special exhibition schedules.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 1.5 hours. Visiting early in the morning when the museum is quieter allows for leisurely viewing of the original artworks.
