Free History Museum at Shunpanro, Japan's First Officially Licensed Fugu Restaurant

A memorial hall on the grounds of Shunpanro, a historic fugu restaurant located right next to Akama Shrine and Japan's first officially licensed fugu establishment. Built to commemorate the Russo-Japanese War peace conference held at this Shunpanro, the hall allows free viewing of the conference room with furnishings recreated in their original positions as they were during the negotiations. Standing before the chairs and table where Hirobumi Itō and Li Hongzhang faced each other will suddenly make the history you read about in textbooks feel tangible. Moreover, Shunpanro is the very place that triggered the lifting of the fugu food ban. As the venue where fugu cuisine was first officially permitted in Shimonoseki, visiting here during your day of fugu tasting allows you to savor the stories behind each dish.
Tips
Free admission, just 1-2 minutes walk from Akama Shrine. The museum is compact but impressive even for a short visit. The adjacent Shunpanro main restaurant offers fugu course dinners, making it perfect to incorporate into a special lunch.

Allow approximately 30 minutes. Early afternoon sees fewer visitors, allowing for leisurely viewing of the exhibits.
