Savor Limited Sweets at the Flagship Shop of the Signature Confection 'Homares no Jintaiko'

About this spot

The flagship shop of Koubai, creator of "Homares no Jintaiko," a signature confection representing Kumamoto. Jintaiko is a sweet made with large azuki beans wrapped in soft mochi, beloved for its drum-like round shape and the unique way it is cut and eaten using the wrapper. "Musha Gaeshi," another signature item with bean paste wrapped in buttery dough, is also popular. In addition to a sales floor, the main shop features an on-site tea room where you can enjoy sweets made with jintaiko and tea sets unique to the flagship location. It's a perfect sweet break spot during your castle town food walk, allowing you to appreciate the depth of Kumamoto's confectionary culture.

Tips

It's most convenient to reach it from the city center by tram or taxi. If buying jintaiko as a souvenir, let the staff know how long you'll be carrying it so they can wrap it properly. The tea room's limited menu items sometimes sell out, so visiting earlier in the day is recommended.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. Afternoon, after the lunch rush, offers a more relaxed atmosphere at the tea room.
