Leisurely Stroll Along the Granite White Beach, a Sea Turtle Nesting Site
About this spot
A sandy beach stretching about 1km in front of the Nagata settlement on the island's northwest. This white sand beach is formed from fragments of granite that comprise Yakushima's mountains, and it's world-renowned as a nesting site for red sea turtles. The Nagata beach area, including the beach itself, is also registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. Before you spreads the blue of the East China Sea, and in the distance the silhouette of Kuchinoerabu, a volcanic island, stands clearly. The coarse sand glistens in the sunlight, and a leisurely walk along the water's edge feels like your heart is being set free. To protect the nesting site, please observe the rules: don't dig holes in the sand or leave trash, and quietly enjoy the time spent on this beautiful beach.
Tips
There's almost nowhere to escape the sun, so don't forget a hat and drinking water. The sandy beach can be difficult to walk on, so shoes that are easy to slip on and off will be more comfortable. On high-wave days, be careful not to approach the water's edge too closely. Take time to read the informational signs about rules for protecting sea turtles and the beach.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes required. During the morning hours with front lighting, the blue sea and white sand are most vibrant.
