Yakushima's Largest Waterfall with an 88-Meter Drop—Bathe in Its Spray

About this spot

Yakushima's largest waterfall at 88 meters, this renowned cascade was selected for the Hundred Best Waterfalls of Japan. The water flows dramatically down granite cliffs, and you can walk from the parking area to approach the waterfall basin, where fine spray caught on the wind creates a delightfully refreshing experience. The towering curtain of water is awe-inspiring, and after rain, the increased water volume creates an even more impressive sight. Along the road leading to the falls, you'll also find Ōkawa Spring Water, selected for Japan's Hundred Best Waters, flowing abundantly—a delightful bonus. Located in the southwestern part of the island, just off the main loop road, makes it convenient to visit.

Tips

The area near the waterfall basin features rocky ground that is slippery, so wear shoes with good grip and watch your footing carefully. You may get wet from the spray, so a towel is a good idea. The Western Forest Road from the Nagata direction has a narrow roadway and Yakushima macaques or deer often appear on the road, so drive slowly and carefully.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes required. After rain, increased water volume creates an even more impressive sight.
