Viewing Platform Overlooking a Waterfall Cascading Down a Giant Granite Monolith
About this spot
A 60-meter waterfall at the base of Mocchom Peak in the island's south. The striking feature is the enormous granite monolith said to measure 250 meters on each side, spreading across the left bank of the falls. According to legend, the falls' name comes from "the size of a thousand people holding hands," and from the viewing platform, you can see the entire scene at once—the water of Tai River flowing into the V-shaped valley, the massive monolith, and the glimmering sea beyond. The grand landscape of rock, waterfall, deep valley, and distant sea vividly conveys the power of Yakushima's untamed nature beyond human reach. The walk from the parking area to the viewing platform is very short, making it easy to stop here as a fitting conclusion to your loop drive.
Tips
While the walk to the viewing platform is short from the parking area, there are stairs, so watch your footing. Since the waterfall is at a distance, binoculars or a telephoto lens will help you enjoy it more fully. After rain, water volume increases and is more impressive, but surfaces become slippery, so walk carefully.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. On clear afternoons, you can see the granite monolith's surface distinctly.
