An Osumi Masterpiece: Shimmering Emerald-Green Falls Pool

About this spot

A waterfall on the upper Ogawa River in Minami-Osumi Town, plunging roughly 46 meters with a width of about 60 meters. The emerald-green glow of its plunge pool is celebrated as a "mystical spectacular view," making it the most popular attraction on the Osumi Peninsula. Countless streams of water flow like white silk threads down the columnar jointed rock face, and the pool's color shifts moment by moment with changing light—breathtakingly beautiful. A well-maintained walking path winds along the stream from the parking area to the falls viewing platform, about 1.2 km one way; the stroll itself through dappled sunlight and the babbling of the creek becomes a travel highlight. The waterfall is also known for appearing in the opening sequence of a major historical drama, and seeing it in the clear morning light is truly exceptional.

Tips

The walking path takes roughly 20–30 minutes one way, so wear comfortable hiking shoes. The water volume increases after heavy rain or during dam discharge upstream, sometimes making the emerald green less visible; ideally visit after several days of clear weather. Bring plenty of water in summer.

Best time to visit

Total time: about 1 hour 40 minutes. Morning is the best viewing time when clear light penetrates the pool
