Mainland Japan's Southernmost Point: Observation Platform with Lighthouse and Boundless Sea
About this spot
Located at the southernmost point of the Kyushu mainland, and part of Kirishima-Kinko Bay National Park. A monument marking the 31st parallel north stands in the park, bringing home the sense of "reaching the very south of mainland Japan." From the parking area, a walking path winds through lush subtropical vegetation including cycads, emerging onto an observation platform atop the cliff. The pristine white Sata Cape Lighthouse (佐多岬灯台) on the offshore Omawari Island ranks among Japan's oldest lighthouses, and beyond it stretches an endless ocean. On clear days, you can even see the silhouettes of Kirishima, Tanegashima, and Yakushima islands—the ultimate climax of this course. Don't forget to offer a prayer at Misaki Shrine along the way.
Tips
The walk from the parking area to the observation platform takes about 20 minutes one way, so wear comfortable hiking shoes. Some sections offer little shade, so bring a hat and water. The road from Neoki to the cape is quite winding; drive at a comfortable pace.

Total time: about 1 hour 30 minutes. Clear days with crisp air offer the best island silhouette views
