Held annually on August 17, this is a representative summer grand fireworks festival of Mie Prefecture. Beyond approximately 10,000 shells, the signature "Onigajo Submarine Fireworks" detonate within the UNESCO World Heritage sea caves of Onigajo Castle, painting white cliffs with a thunderous roar and unmatched spectacle that overwhelms spectators. Famous for launching Japan's rare "three-shaku balls," when diameter exceeds 600 meters—the moment these magnificent blooms unfold and the ground-shaking boom erupts can only be truly appreciated from the sandy beach. Two hours viewing from the expansive Shichiri Mihama beach looking directly up is described as one of Japan's premier fireworks experiences.

In case of severe weather or wave warnings, the festival is cancelled (no rain date)—always check Kumano City's official announcement on the day. After the show, roads around Kumano Station become heavily congested—staggered departures are recommended. Three-shaku balls produce considerable noise from nearby beach areas—consider providing earplugs for infants.

Best time to visit

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM entire event duration is climactic. The Onigajo Submarine Fireworks and three-shaku balls are especially unmissable.
