About this spot

This shrine, also called 《Wakayama's Nikko》, is associated with the Kishu Tokugawa family. Climb the steep stone steps called Shuju-bashi to the top, and shrine buildings decorated with vividly colored carvings appear, their splendor sure to surprise you. Partway up the steps, there's also a view overlooking the direction of Wakanoura, making it a place you can enjoy along with the sense of accomplishment of reaching the top. It's a worthwhile detour before the Kishu Odori festival to experience the atmosphere of a shrine long cherished by locals.

Tips

The stone steps are quite steep, so small children and elderly visitors should climb slowly using the handrail. It's easy to work up a sweat on the steps in summer, so bringing a drink and a hand towel is reassuring.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes. The afternoon, when the sunlight softens, is easier and recommended for climbing
