About this spot

This museum displays up close the hikiyama floats and iori-yatai music floats actually used in the Johana Hikiyama Festival, held every May. The Johana Hikiyama Festival is registered as one of the “Yama, Hoko, Yatai, Float Festivals” on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, and the floats also stand as works of art and craft, polished through competition among townspeople who prospered through silk weaving. The museum also introduces the history behind the floats and another festival tradition passed down in Johana, offering a glimpse of a side of Johana different from the Mugiya Festival that is the star of this course.

Tips

Within walking distance of Johana Station. It's best to take your time reading the explanations as you go around, and the cool interior also makes a good place to rest during the summer-to-autumn season.
