About this spot

As a renowned temple of the Jodo Shinshu sect, this temple has a large precinct at the center of Johana. It flourished under the patronage of the Maeda family of the Kaga domain, and it's also the place that laid the foundation for Johana being called “a town of silk, floats, and faith.” The impressive timber framework and large tiled roof of the main hall are well worth seeing, and just walking the grounds lets you feel the depth of this town's history. At night, this precinct becomes one of the main venues of the Mugiya Festival, so seeing its quiet daytime expression first makes the contrast with the evening's lively atmosphere all the more memorable.

Tips

You can stop by on the way back into town from Michi-no-Eki Johana. The temple gets crowded with festival-goers at night, so if you want to take a good look at the design of the buildings on the grounds, daytime is recommended.

About 45 minutes. You can take your time visiting during the quiet afternoon hours.
