Fresh Seafood Grilled Over a Shichirin Brazier: The Signature Seaside Lunch
About this spot
This roadside station sits at the base of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge on Ōshima Island's side, facing Shimoda Port. The specialty is fresh seafood grilled over a shichirin (traditional seven-ring brazier). You'll select fish, shrimp, shellfish, and other seafood from the live tanks and displays, place them on the shichirin right on the spot, and savor freshly grilled treasures while gazing at the Kurushima Kaikyo Strait. The product corner displays local citrus fruits, seafood, and Shimanami souvenirs in abundance—perfect for finding cycling refreshments. The tidal observation boat departing from the nearby port allows you to experience up close the powerful rapids created by the whirling Kurushima Kaikyo currents, making this an ideal rest spot to engage all your senses with the power of the sea.
Tips
The seafood grilling area has limited seating; weekend lunch hours may involve a wait. Arriving early from opening time is recommended. Smoke from the grilling can stain clothing, so bundle your jacket and leave it by your feet. If time and energy permit, consider taking the tidal observation boat (additional fee).
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Arriving early before the lunch rush lets you secure a table facing the sea and provides plenty of time for your afternoon ride.
