UNESCO World Heritage Site: Government Silk-Reeling Factory Supporting Japan's Modernization

About this spot

Established by the Meiji government in 1872, this was Japan's first full-scale government mechanical silk-reeling factory. Built with French technology, the red-brick filature buildings and massive timber-and-brick cocoon warehouses remain nearly unchanged since their construction. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014 as part of the "Tomioka Silk Mill and Silk Industry Heritage Sites," walking the expansive grounds offers a hands-on sense of the industrial history supporting Japan's modernization—ideal for family learning.
