A precious castle unique among Japan's strongholds—Kochi Castle is the only one where both the keep and the hon-maru palace buildings survive. Stone steps from the Otesuji gate lead to structures that retain nearly their original Edo-era appearance. From the keep, the Otesuji street lies fully visible—soon to be filled with naruko sounds, yet a daytime glimpse offers a special festival perspective. The interior displays relics connected to successive feudal lords, and the cool, shaded wooden keep provides respite from the heat as you explore.

2026年のよさこい祭りは8月9日(日)から12日(水)まで4日間、高知市中心部の追手筋本部競演場をはじめ市内各所の競演場・演舞場で開催されます。初日となる今日は、全国から集まった200近いチームが、鳴子を手に「よさこい鳴子踊り」の曲に乗せて次々と目の前を通り過ぎていきます。衣装や振付、地方車の飾りつけはチームごとに個性があり、伝統的な和の衣装から現代的なパフォーマンスまで幅広いスタイルが楽しめます。追手筋本部競演場は最も大きな会場のひとつで、審査本部も置かれる祭りの中心地です。夏の夜風の中、鳴子の乾いた音と歓声に包まれる時間は、この4日間だけの特別な体験です。

Tips

会場周辺は祭り期間中大規模な交通規制がかかるため、公共交通機関の利用がおすすめです。沿道は早い時間から場所取りが始まるので、良い位置で見たい場合は16時台には到着を。ベビーカーでの見学は人混みで動きづらいことがあるため、後方や広い交差点付近が安心です。荒天時の開催可否は主催者の発表を確認しましょう。

Tips

A few minutes' walk from the Sunday Market venue. There are many stairs up to the castle keep, so wear comfortable shoes. Admission fee required. The summer sun is strong, so take your time and stay hydrated as you explore.
