Omori Shell Mound Site Garden Mist Fountain (water play)
About this spot
The Omori Shell Mound Site Garden Mist Fountain (water play) is a free water play spot in the Omori Shell Mound Site Garden (大森貝塚遺跡庭園) in Shinagawa Ward. The garden was laid out around the Omori Shell Mound, a nationally designated historic site regarded as the birthplace of archaeology in Japan, and a corridor inside evokes geological strata so you can see with your own eyes how the shell layers have built up. In the central plaza, a fountain that generates mist runs twice an hour, and the whole area is enveloped in white. Rather than soaking in water as in a pool, the play here is running through the mist, which makes it easy to join in even for children who dislike water. The ward's official page does not state the operating period, and it is assumed to run year-round, but check the actual operating status before setting out. Admission is free.
Season & hours
Name: 大森貝塚遺跡庭園 霧の噴水(水遊び)
Date & time: 1/1 (Thu)–12/31 (Thu) 通年 ※中央広場で1時間に2回ミスト(霧)が噴射(区公式に稼働期間の明記なし)
Venue: 品川区・大森貝塚遺跡庭園
Tips
The ground gets wet and slippery once you are in the mist, so bringing a change of clothes is recommended. Have children wear non-slip shoes or sandals and watch their footing when they run about. The operating period and the spray times are not officially stated, so check the official Shinagawa Ward page before setting out. As this is a garden laid out around a historic site, tell children not to run near the monuments and displays. In cooler seasons the mist chills the body, so bringing something to throw on straight away is reassuring.
Best time to visit
Arriving at 15:20 lets you experience several rounds of mist. Late afternoon, as the heat eases, is the most comfortable
