Explore the Hot Spring Source Area of Noboribetsu Onsen Where Steam Rises on a Boardwalk
About this spot
Known as the symbol of Noboribetsu Onsen, this is the crater of an explosion with a diameter of approximately 450 meters. Steam rises from the pale gray rock surface in places, and the scene of hot spring water gushing from the ground has been compared to "Hell where demons dwell." Most of the abundant hot water that flows through Noboribetsu Onsen is supplied from this valley, with some 10,000 tons of hot spring water said to gush forth daily. A wooden boardwalk has been laid throughout the valley, and at the "Iron Spring Pond" in the center, you can observe hot spring water welling up like an intermittent geyser from up close. The smell of sulfur and the sound like the earth's heartbeat echoing from the ground make children feel like planetary explorers. The location, just a short walk from the hot spring town, is perfect for an early morning exploration.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk from Noboribetsu Onsen Bus Terminal, located at the back of the hot spring town. By car, use the paid Hell Valley parking lot. Although the boardwalk is well maintained, there are areas with a strong sulfur smell, so don't force children if it bothers them. Comfortable sneakers are recommended for walking.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. Early morning has fewer tour buses, and the steam looks magical in the morning sun.
