About this spot

This roadside station stands along National Route 282, at the gateway to Hachimantai City, with views of the majestic Mt. Iwate. The farmers' market corner, lined with the local specialty spinach along with highland vegetables and mountain produce, is busy with local shoppers from the morning, making it ideal for picking up snacks and drinks for the drive. The signature item is a vividly green spinach soft-serve ice cream made with the local spinach, whose surprisingly refreshing aftertaste gets the trip off to a great start. From the parking lot you can see Mt. Iwate spreading its broad foothills, building anticipation for the climb up Mt. Hachimantai ahead. This is the perfect first stop to fuel up and stock up before heading to the Aspite Line.

Tips

Easily accessible, about 5 minutes by car from the Nishine IC on the Tohoku Expressway. Popular items at the farmers' market can sell out by late morning, so grab anything that catches your eye early. Shops are limited around the summit, so it's a good idea to stock up on drinks and snacks here.

About 40 minutes. Best visited in the morning, before setting off on the drive, when the farmers' market selection is at its best.
