This iconic ropeway of Zao connects Zao Hot Springs with Jizo Mountain Summit. Transfer between the Base Line from Zao Base Station to Jizahara Station and the Summit Line from Jizahara Station to Jizo Summit Station (elevation 1,661m) for a quick ascent. As you rise higher, the view unfolds dramatically—the sea of trees below, the hot spring town, and distant mountain ranges—keeping children at the window endlessly entertained. Winter brings the world-famous ice-coated trees, summer offers respite from heat, autumn displays vibrant foliage, and the green season offers encounters with dragonflies and alpine plants. Even at the height of summer, the summit remains cool, making the temperature difference itself a fascinating discovery for children. The station area changes with the seasons, offering new perspectives throughout the year.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk from Zao Hot Springs Bus Terminal to Zao Base Station; parking is available in front of the base station. Even in midsummer, the summit can be nearly 10 degrees cooler than the base, so don't forget a jacket for the children. The ropeway may suspend operations on windy days, so check the official website for operating status before heading out.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1 hour for the round trip and summit walk. Early morning is recommended when the air is clear and visibility is excellent.
