About this spot

This large stone Jizo statue, standing 2.34m tall, is enshrined right by Jizo-sancho Station (地蔵山頂駅) on the Zao Ropeway. It's said to have been built over roughly 37 years during the Anei era of the Edo period, and has since watched over visitors to Zao as a ‘Jizo who wards off disaster.’ In winter, the statue becomes buried in snow with only its head peeking out, a scene well known as a symbol of winter in Zao. In the green season, a sweeping highland panorama opens up right in front of you, giving a curious sense of praying above the clouds. Since it's reachable with barely any walking from the station, it's a summit landmark that even families with small children can visit with ease. After paying your respects, be sure to also enjoy the views from the lookout spots around the station.

Tips

It's just a short walk from Jizo-sancho Station, and visiting is free. Weather at the summit can change quickly, and the wind can feel cold even in summer, so bring something for the whole family to layer up. The surrounding walking paths include boardwalks and gravel sections, so a baby carrier is easier to manage than a stroller.

Best time to visit

About 30-45 minutes. It's best to visit right after riding the ropeway up, during the morning when visibility is good
