About this spot

This is a roughly 100-hectare ranch spreading out at the foot of the Zao mountain range in Zao Town, Miyagi Prefecture. Admission is free, and cattle, sheep, goats, and other animals graze here, letting you feed and interact with them up close. At the adjoining hands-on workshop hall, you can try making cheese, butter, and more (reservation required), and there's also a café serving cheese dishes and a Jingisukan (grilled mutton) restaurant nearby. There's also a shop selling Zao cheese souvenirs, so you can spend time interacting with the animals while feeling the highland breeze.

Tips

It's about a 20-30 minute drive from Zao Onsen, and there is free parking. Admission is free, and feed for the animals can be purchased on site. Wet wipes are handy for washing your hands after touching the animals. There is little shade in the pastures, so remember hats and water in summer. The hands-on experience menus are offered only on certain days, so check in advance if you'd like to take part.
