Enjoy Zao's specialty inagamochi rice cakes on bamboo leaves and light refreshments for a restful break
About this spot
This long-established shop in the hot spring town manufactures and sells inagamochi, the signature sweet of Zao Hot Springs. Inagamochi consists of sweet red bean paste wrapped in tender mochi, topped with yellow grains of rice that resemble rice flowers, arranged on bamboo leaves—a confectionery unique to Zao Hot Springs. Because they have a short shelf life, they can only be tasted here, making them a special "only-here" treat cherished since the days of therapeutic hot spring visitors. The shop has a tea seating area where you can enjoy freshly made inagamochi with tea, as well as light meals. The gentle sweetness and soft, chewy texture are easy for small children to enjoy, making it the perfect lunch break after a morning of walking. The subtle fragrance of bamboo leaves will surely become a treasured memory of your Zao visit.
Tips
Located near the center of Zao Hot Spring town and accessible on foot from the bus terminal. Inagamochi is best when freshly made, and they often sell out by afternoon, so visiting early is recommended. Since the sweets don't keep long, if taking them as a gift, buy only what can be eaten the same day.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1 hour, including a lunch break. Visit early in the day before they sell out.
