A stroll around the castle ruins with moat and stone walls, enjoying the atmosphere of Soma's castle town
About this spot
A park developed from the remains of Nakamura Castle, where the Soma clan resided throughout the Edo period. The name 'Baryo' comes from an alternative name for Nakamura Castle, Baryo Castle. Traces of the castle remain throughout the park—filled moat, ramparts, stone walls, and the main gate—and walking along the moat-side path offers an enjoyable historical stroll through the castle town of Soma. The park grounds are home to Soma Nakamura Shrine and Soma Shrine, and the landscape formed by lush trees and the moat waters creates a calm, serene atmosphere. It is also one of Soma's premier cherry blossom viewing spots, with blossoms lining the moat in spring, and the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. As a place of historical significance associated with the Soma Nomaoi festival, the spirit of the samurai town lives on, and a complete loop around the park following your shrine visit allows you to fully immerse yourself in Soma's history before heading toward the sea.
Tips
Located in the same castle ruins area as Soma Nakamura Shrine, easily accessible on foot after your shrine visit. The grounds are mainly sandy and dirt paths, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Some sections along the moat offer little shade, so bring a hat and water during warm seasons.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Early morning hours are ideal for strolling. The scenery is particularly pleasant when vegetation is lush.
