About this spot

This whitewashed lighthouse stands on a bluff at Cape Unoo, the promontory separating Matsukawaura from the Pacific Ocean. The prefectural road leading here, the Osu-Matsukawa Line, is an exhilarating seaside road running along the top of the sandbar with the Pacific Ocean on the right and Matsukawaura on the left, and this stretch could be called the highlight drive of the whole course. A promenade is maintained around the lighthouse, offering a luxurious view where you can take in two contrasting seas at once: the grand Pacific Ocean to the east and the mirror-like Matsukawaura to the west. In the evening, the slanting sunlight makes the water sparkle, creating a dramatic scene fitting to close out the day. The sweeping panorama the two of you take in while feeling the sea breeze is sure to become one of the best memories of the trip.

Tips

About 10 minutes by car from Hama-no-Eki Matsukawaura via the Osu-Matsukawa Line, with parking space around the cape. Reaching the lighthouse involves walking up a slope on a promenade from the parking area, so wear shoes that are easy to walk in. The cape often has strong winds, so be careful your hat doesn't blow away. Since it gets dark underfoot after sunset, visiting while it's still light is recommended.
