About this spot
The first sacred site among the Eighty-Eight Temples of Shikoku, known as the 'Temple of Vow-Taking' and the starting point of the pilgrimage route. According to tradition, it was founded by the Buddhist monk Gyoki, and Kobo Daishi practiced here before making his vow to establish the sacred pilgrimage sites. Passing through the Nio Gate, vermillion pagodas and the main hall stand in succession, while countless lanterns hung from the ceiling of the main hall create a mystical atmosphere. In the pond within the grounds, carp swim leisurely, and the shop stocks a complete set of pilgrimage essentials—white robes, walking staffs, and pilgrimage record books—allowing visitors to experience pilgrimage culture firsthand. You will also encounter pilgrims on foot setting out to visit the sacred sites, a sight unique to the first temple.
Tips
Free parking available. Purchase your pilgrimage record book at Ryozenji's shop to begin collecting stamps from the first sacred site. The main hall requires removing your shoes, so slip-on footwear is recommended for comfort.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. Early morning visits mean fewer pilgrims, allowing you to savor the quiet grounds and fragrant incense at your leisure.
