Touch the Long-Life Cedar Planted by Kobo Daishi and Pray for Longevity
About this spot
The second sacred site of the Eighty-Eight Temples pilgrimage route. The principal image is Amida Buddha, and the temple is also held in deep reverence as a place for prayers for safe childbirth. The main attraction is the sacred Long-Life Cedar standing beside the stone steps leading to the main hall. This giant cedar is said to have been planted by Kobo Daishi himself, and touching the red and white cords extending from its trunk is believed to bring blessings of longevity and household safety. The vermillion-painted Nio Gate and the Wish-Granting Jizō statue, which worshippers lift while making their prayers, are packed into a compact shrine grounds. Being just a few minutes by car from Ryozenji Temple, it allows you to continue experiencing the pilgrimage atmosphere seamlessly.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from Ryozenji Temple; free parking available. The Long-Life Cedar is protected, so touch the red and white cords extending from the trunk rather than the trunk itself. Stone steps lead to the main hall, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes required. Morning light filters gently through the trees, revealing the beautiful texture of the cedar's bark.
