About this spot

This limestone cave was formed as coral reefs were uplifted over long ages and then dissolved by rainwater. In the section open to the public, countless stalactites hang densely from the ceiling and stalagmites rise from the floor, leading through a vast space known as the Forest of the Gods' Sculptures (神々の彫刻の森) and on into fantastical areas decorated with illumination. Fossils of sea creatures such as giant clams can also be seen on the cave walls, offering a tangible sense that this island's land was born from a coral sea, which is part of what makes it so fascinating. The temperature stays nearly constant year-round, feeling cool in summer and warm in winter, a distinctive feature of this underground walk. It's a different world where you'll encounter an unexpected side of this southern island.

Tips

Some sections of the cave's passageway are wet and slippery, so non-slip shoes are reassuring, more so than sandals. There are stairs to climb and descend, so take your time and use the handrails. The cave stays cool even in summer, so bringing something to layer on is comfortable. The illuminated areas are a popular spot for photos.

About 1 hour 15 minutes. A cool underground walk feels especially pleasant during the hot hours of the day
