About this spot

This is Japan's southernmost arcade shopping street, running through the center of Ishigaki City. Around 100 shops, including souvenir stores, restaurants, and general goods shops, line its two streets, making for an enjoyable stroll that lets you soak up the island atmosphere. For lunch, try Yaeyama soba, known for its light broth and slightly thick, rounded noodles. The area also has a public market beloved as the local kitchen, as well as a center selling local specialty products, offering a full lineup of Ishigaki souvenirs from island salt and brown sugar to chinsuko cookies and awamori liquor. There's also plenty of street food to snack on, such as sata andagi (fried doughnuts) and tropical fruit juices, making this a place to enjoy a stretch of time where island daily life and tourism gently intersect.

Tips

Being an arcade, it's easy to walk through comfortably even on rainy days or during hours with strong sunlight. Popular Yaeyama soba shops tend to get lines around lunchtime, so shifting your timing slightly makes things smoother. The alleys are a bit of a maze, so if a shop catches your eye, it's best to stop in right then. Save bulky souvenirs for one final round of shopping at the end.

About 1 hour 45 minutes. Visiting slightly outside the lunchtime peak lets you take your time at both the soba shops and souvenir stores
